Sometimes we get to work with local organizations to help them with their goals. The Port Carbon Public Library reached out to us for help in creating a display case. The dimensions were relatively small and they had a specific vision for what they were hoping to get. We suggested adding a little storage underneath to utilize the space and then we were off and running. Special thanks to Dave at DRB Woodworking who donated some time and materials towards this gift for the library. The library was awarded a $200 grant which went towards paying for the plexiglass, and the rest was sourced through various donations. I should have taken the time to take a better picture (one without dust all over the glass would have made sense) but I forgot in my rush to wrap it in moving blankets so I didn’t accidentally scratch it.
This was designed to allow the entire top to lift off so items of interest could be lowered down into the case and each of the plexi panels is fully removable on the off chance a motivated patron ever breaks it by accident. The doors on the bottom are affixed with soft close hinges for quiet operation (it is a library after all) and offer plenty of storage behind them. We chose not to stain the interior of the case and to instead just clear coat.
This was a fun little build and I’m looking forward to seeing what the library puts in it first. Stop down at check them out at 111 Pike Street, Port Carbon, PA, United States, Pennsylvania to see this and all of their other treasures for yourself 🙂
