Cutting Boards – Back To Our Roots

Building cutting boards is sort of like taking our woodshop back to its roots. When we first started out as a company we sold more cutting boards than anything else. Building new inventory is still one of those calming activities that we enjoy a few times a year. Sometimes however we end up with a stockpile of walnut, maple, cherry, etc that goes to our “we’ll use it someday” bin. Well, that day is today. We’re going to use a few hundred linear feet of domestic hardwoods from that bin to build some great new cutting boards.

In the next few weeks while we’re working on restorations and renovations we will also be putting together new boards. We have a few new design ideas that we haven’t built before and we will sprinkle in some exotics too. Expect to see bloodwood from tropical South America and purple heart from Brazil.

Custom Cutting Boards

If you have a custom requirement for a cutting board let us know. We can produce them up to 35″ deep by as wide as you’d like. Any larger and you’re basically making a countertop which we can help you out with too!

Reach out to us to talk about replacing your kitchen island top with a custom butcher block version out of the hardwood of your choice. A popular replacement option is black walnut which ads a lot of character and deep rich color to your kitchen. Pair it with a custom walnut cutting board and you’ll add the style and comfort you’ve been looking for.

Picking A Cutting Board

What should you look for when buying a wooden cutting board? You want to make sure it’s made with actual hardwood. Some manufacturers might say their product is made from maple but is it hard maple? There are several kinds with wildly varying quality. We only use true hardwoods.

You also want to be sure they used a food-safe adhesive. Not all glue is created equal. Getting into the details of why certain adhesives might not be the best is the subject of a whole new post but suffice to say we use Titebond 3, which is food safe.
