This cedar chest was in very bad shape when we found it. There were significant fractures in the bottom and sides, the veneer on the outside was peeling in a big way and the original top was beyond recovery. Overall it was in deep need of some TLC. We decided to replace the top entirely with a brand new piece made from red oak stained in dark walnut. Triple hand wiped clear coats will protect it from scratches for years to come. The chest itself was repaired and covered in Old Ochre chalk paint from Annie Sloan. Finally it was distressed to compliment its age and waxed to perfection.
