A Veneer Of Possibility

veneer

We recently began a restoration on a veneer covered cedar chest for a long time customer. Veneer is one thing we hate to see come into the woodshop. It’s difficult to sand, it breaks off in unplanned ways and sometimes it just bubbles up for no earthly reason. This chest had a decent amount of veneer damage which required repair. One way to accomplish this is the break off whatever loose veneer will easily come off. Then press Titebond III wood glue under the edges to stop further trouble; Lastly, fill. We chose to fill with Timber Mate. Its dries nicely and sands very well. The damage pictured here was finally block sanded with 220 grit to maintain a nice even surface.
