We recently made a mobile planter our of some beautiful Arizona Cypress. Pictured here is part of the assembly. The bottom pieces that will take the bulk of the weight from the dirt are not actually fastened to the rest of the planter. As you can see the dado joint will support everything structurally while still allowing the wood to expand and contract along with changes in humidity and moisture in the soil. We will post pictures of the finished planter later this week.
