We got a few questions recently about which finish we were putting on some of the furniture restorations coming out of the shop. I am a big fan of General Finishes Arm R Seal. They have a wide selection of products and even within the realm of top coats that have a lot of options. We’ve been using the oil and urethane combination products for a few years but I recently purchased the oil only version. The biggest difference between them is that the oil only version goes on thicker and soaks into the material at a different rate. Overall I think its an advantage. It gives me more time to work with it before it soaks in. If you’re looking to give it a try I recommend applying with a lint free cloth and wiping with the grain. As with any finish the prep work is key so make sure you’ve cleaned the piece with a tack cloth before starting.
