We have posted some pictures recently of the various stages of restoration on this 36″ pepper grinder and finally its time with ES&S has come to an end. You can see in this collage the dramatic difference between where it started and how it ended. Overall there was 17 hours put into disassembly, cleaning, the removal of years worth of dirt and coats of stain, rebuilding the broken or damaged pieces and finally into the staining and clear coating to give it the shine you see. Special care was given to each of the five clear coats applied. All were wiped on by hand so as to remove the chance of a brush stroke appearing in the final finish. Between each coat a minimum of 12 hours passed so it could begin to cure. Then it was sanded starting with 600 grit and moving on to an ultra fine 1200 before finally switching to 4000. All the while leaving the natural imperfection, dents and discoloration that give the grinder its character. We are very happy to return it to its owners this week. Come visit it at the Grey Stone in Pottsville!
