Wood Trivia!

PinkCedar

So I was reading online about different woods and how to identify them when you cut down a tree and came across some random but solid trivia. This pink tree above is actually cedar. When its first cut it ends up being pretty pink/red due to the essential oils in the tree itself. Years ago Native Americans would make poles and posts from this heartwood and use them to mark important meeting spots. When French traders noticed all these red sticks in one particular area they named that spot “red stick” or…Baton Rouge. Neat.

On a separate note; If you haven’t had the pleasure of smelling fresh cedar right after its been cut then you are missing out on one of life’s true joys. I’m not talking about buying something made from cedar. I mean you witnessed a blade shape the wood in front of you and are now enjoying all that the aroma has to offer. It’s really quite excellent.
